General Information

Easily reached from Buenos Aires by a short flight or boat trip across the River Plate, Uruguay makes an ideal side trip from Argentina.

Montevideo, the country’s cosmopolitan capital, has a relaxed atmosphere and contains some interesting small museums and an old quarter (La Ciudad Vieja) that is home to the city’s most historic monuments, including the elegant colonial buildings around the Plaza de la Constitución. West of the capital lies the picturesque town of Colonia del Sacramento, a historic port that once prospered as the centre for the smuggling of British goods into the Spanish Colonies.

Its attractive ‘Barrio Histórico’, a fascinating warren of cobbled streets and wellpreserved colonial buildings, has been declared a site of cultural importance by UNESCO. To the East, the sophisticated beach resort of Punta del Este is the ideal place to enjoy the nightlife or to rub shoulders with South America’s rich and famous. The inland region is mainly agricultural and a number of estancias (ranches) can be visited to get an idea of the daily life of the countryside.
