Day 1
(Tuesday/Thursday or Saturday)
Transfer in the morning to the old train station of
Quito where the 'autoferro' (a one coach train, like a bus on
tracks) departs towards the South. One of the highlights of the
trip is to "ride the roof" with a panoramic view of the
stunning Andean region of Ecuador. The autoferro ascends to the
station of El Boliche, within the National Recreational Area of
the same name, which is covered with pine trees, planted in 1928
as a scientific experiment to prove that foreign conifers could
adapt to high-altitude ecosystems. Then proceed along the Avenue
of the Volcanoes to visit an Indian market (Latacunga if Tuesday
or Saturday, Saquisili if Thursday). In the afternoon visit the
highest point in the railway at Urbina and observe the way of
life of the inhabitants of the Andean region, the produce of the
Andes and a loom to see the weaving process. Continue on to
Riobamba for a short visit of the city. Overnight at a Tourist
Class hotel in Riobamba. (Lunch & Dinner).
Day 2
(Wednesday/Friday or Sunday)
After an early breakfast transfer to the train station
to board the autoferro train for a scenic ride to Alausí. Then
continue down the Devil's Nose, one of the most impressive feats
of rail engineering in the world, and back to Alausi. Disembark
in Alausi and continue by car to Ingapirca to visit the Inca
Ruins and then onwards to Cuenca. (Breakfast, Lunch &
Dinner).
Day 3
(Thursday/Saturday or Monday)
Full day excursion visiting colonial Cuenca, with its
museums, artisans shops and craft-producing centers for ceramics,
jewellery, embroidery and straw 'Panama' hats weaving. (Breakfast
& Lunch).
Day 4
(Friday/Sunday or Tuesday)
Explore the Cajas National Park, a protected area
starting at 3,000 metres above sea level, a region that shows
remains of intense volcanic activity and glaciation. The scenery
surrounding the 230 lakes is splendid for walking and hiking as
well as for observing the flora and fauna. Return to Cuenca in
the afternoon and transfer to the airport for your flight back to
Quito. (Breakfast & Lunch).
