Paraguay
General
Information
Often overlooked by travellers, landlocked Paraguay is a largely unspoilt and predominantly rural nation that makes an interesting side trip from Northern Argentina or Southern Brazil.
Paraguays unique character is defined by the powerful influence of the indigenous Guaraní language which is taught in schools and forms an intrinsic part of the nations cultural life. Most of the population is concentrated in the fertile south-eastern region which includes the pleasant capital city of Asunción overlooking the Paraguay River. The small town of Itauguá is famous for its traditional crafts, most notably the beautiful spiderweb lace (or ñandutí) which is produced in more than 100 designs. Close to the Brazilian border and accessible from the Iguazú Falls area is the amazing Itaipú Dam, one of the world's largest hydroelectric projects, which has to be seen to be believed. Further south near Argentina lie the fascinating ruins of a number of Jesuit Missions, the most renowned of which are those of Trinidad whose evocative church, now open to the elements, contains some fantastically ornate stone carvings. For those interested in the natural world, the remote and sparsely populated Chaco region in the west, covering two thirds of the country, is perhaps the last great wilderness on the continent and offers stunning scenery and an astonishing amount and variety of birdlife.
