COSTA RICA

The small Central American country of Costa Rica is a nature lover's paradise that harbours an amazing abundance of plant and animal life in a network of National Parks and nature reserves that cover a quarter of its area. A beautiful land of simmering volcanoes, rain and cloud forests and stunning palm-lined beaches, this hospitable country is the ideal holiday destination for both adventure and relaxation.

Land of Volcanoes

With nine active volcanoes, Costa Rica offers visitors a vivid reminder of the awesome forces that shaped the earth. In the Poas Volcano National Par, scenic look-outs amidst lush cloud forest view the volcano's twin craters, a steaming active crater and an idyllic lake-filled extinct crater while the Irazú Volcano is a scene of moon-like desolation with an immense crater caused by violent eruptions. Costa Rica's most active volcano is the perfectly conical Arenal whose awe-inspiring and spectacular eruptions light up the night sky.

Cloud and Rain Forests

The cloud and mist draped summits of Costa Rica's mountains and volcanoes create a prolific environment of algaes, mosses, orchids, bromeliads and ferns while the country's tropical lowland rain forests are among the most biologically rich in the world and harbour a huge diversity of plant and animal species. No trip to Costa Rica would be complete without a visit to one of its rich protected areas such as the Tortuguero National Park where experienced guides will unlock the mysteries of the rain forest on a boat journey through a stretch of tranquil canals that lead to stunning palm-lined beaches that are an important nesting spot for sea turtles.

Paradise for Naturalists and Adventurers

Tortuguero Canals

Costa Rica's beautiful and diverse protected areas are a paradise for photographers and naturalists with more than 800 species of birds, including the world's most beautiful bird, the Resplendent Quetzal, 10% of the world's butterfly species and a rich diversity of fauna. The more adventurous will find the country's many parts ideal for hiking, white water rafting and horseback riding to name but a few of the many activities possible in this tropical paradise. Sun and Beaches After visiting the awesome splendour of its volcanoes and forests and enjoying the warmth and hospitality of its people, no visit to Costa Rica would be complete without some time to relax and enjoy some of the country's beautiful beaches. From the sun- drenched beaches of Guanacaste in. the Northwest to the lovely sands and lush caves of Manuel Antonio on the Southern Pacific Coast or the beautiful palm-lined beaches of the Caribbean, Costa Rica's many beaches are the perfect place to relax, unwind and forget about the rest of the world.

GUATEMALA

Guatemala, the heart of the Maya World, is a unique land of bright colours and powerful contrasts. Against a backdrop of spectacular volcanoes, bustling Indian villages, amazing archaeological sites and beautiful Spanish colonial towns, the country presents a fascinating mixture of ancient and modern cultures.

Antigua Guatemala

Antigua Guatemala, the former capital of Guatemala, is a Spanish Colonial gem that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Nestled in the shadow of three volcanoes, Antigua is a quiet, pretty town whose cobblestone streets harbour centuries' old churches, convents and plazas. Today Antigua is also home to some of Guatemala's finest hotels, restaurants and craft shops and is a pleasant alternative to the bustle of nearby Guatemala City.

Chichicastenango

Chichicastenango is a famous meeting point for Indians of the Western Highlands who gather on market days to sell their produce and traditional handicrafts. The colourful market offers an excellent opportunity to purchase the exquisite craft products for which Guatemala is renowned, particularly the brightly coloured textiles.

Lake Atitlán

Ringed by volcanoes, Lake Atitlán is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world and is surrounded by Indian Villages whose inhabitants have tenaciously clung to their traditional ways of life despite outside influences. Each village has its unique costume making a visit to this scenic area an excellent opportunity to witness the diversity of culture and history that Guatemala has to offer.

Tikal National Park

Tikal

The tropical lowlands of Guatemala are home to the ruins of cities that were enigmatically abandoned by the Mayas. The deserted city of Tikal includes the tallest temples built by the Mayas including Pyramid IV, the tallest pre-Columbian structure in the Americas. Emerging from a 220 square mile protected rainforest, the ruins of Tikal are a magical place of pyramids and temples that remain shrouded in mystery.
