Amazon Clipper Cruises

The Amazon Clipper is a traditional vessel which is well adapted to the region. Accommodation is in 8 double cabins each with air conditioning, shower and toilet facilities. There is a covered area which serves as a dinner room and salon with video, specialised library and games. A sun deck is equipped with deck chairs and there is a well equipped kitchen with freezer. Two outboard motor canoes are used for side-trips and fishing and all cruises are accompanied by a specialist in aspects of Amazon biology.

4-Day/3-Night

Day 1 - Wednesday
Depart in the afternoon from the Hotel Tropical landing stage. After a presentation on board of the staff, route and facilities, sail to the Ariau river (a tributary of the Rio Negro). Take a canoe trip shortly before sunset with the possibility of observing nocturnal animals and to perceive the change in the forest as night falls. After dinner, sail to Açu creek or nearby tributaries. (Dinner)

Day 2 - Thursday
After breakfast, walk in the forest to observe the flora with a specialist guide. Visit a 'Caboclo' (native of the area) family which will give you a chance to see the local way of life and the preparation of manioc flour (the staple foodstuff of the Amazon). Visit the small isolated town of Novo Airo with the opportunity to see the local boat building sawmills, the market and sometimes the commerce of palm-fibre and ornamental fish. Continue sailing and after dinner take a night trip to see caimans (alligators) and possibly frogs, sloths, snakes and other species, depending on the season. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 3 - Friday
After breakfast, sail to Praia Grande or another white sand beach. If conditions permit you will be able to swim and to observe the vegetation of the sandy areas. Take a canoe trip to Lake Acajatuba or adjacent lake domains to see typical flora (rubber trees, Brazil Nut Trees, useful palm trees etc.) and have the opportunity to fish for piranhas. After lunch, depending on water levels and wind, stop at the Paricatuba community to see old abandoned rubber-boom buildings now overgrown with strangle fig trees or take a canoe trip in the Jacareubal area. Dinner and continue sailing. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 4 - Saturday
Take a canoe trip at sunrise for bird watching and, after breakfast, sail to the 'Meeting of the Waters'. Return to the Hotel Tropical landing stage around 11:30 a.m. with fine views of the Manaus waterfront, activity and commerce. (Breakfast)

3-Day/2-Night

Day 1 - Monday
Depart from the Tropical Hotel at 14:00 passing the ‘Meeting of the Waters’ and sailing through the Xiborena and Careiro regions to Curari. Here you will take a canoe trip in the smaller tributaries to see the economic life of the floodplain including rubber trees and market gardens as well as the floodplain forest and lakes. The trip returns after sunset giving you a chance to observe nocturnal wildlife such as caimans. Continue sailing up the Rio Solimoes to Lake Janauaca. (Dinner)

Day 2 - Tuesday
Take an early morning canoe trip for bird-watching with good chances to see hoatzin and large flocks of greets and cormorants. After lunch continue sailing and then have the chance to fish for piranhas.
